Bizory

Bizory is a small village just outside Bastogne. Several buildings still show damage that they sustained during the Battle of the Bulge.

About half way between Bizory and Foy was the main railway line into Bastogne. The railway line no longer exists, but there remains the station building. There is also a memorial to Easy Company of the 10st Airborne.

Another farm.

This large barn was substantially damaged during the Battle of the Bulge. After the war it was rebuilt. You cans ee that some of the brick work is differently coloured from the rest. Today it houses a company called Animalaine.

Note the lighter brick work in the centre.

Small chapel in Bizory.

Controversial memorial to Easy Company of the 101st Airborne. The Bois Jacques woods (sometimes (mis?)-spelt as Jack Woods) are in the background.

The memorial is controversial because Easy company was only a small part of the Allied forces present in the area, and no such memorial exists for the others.

The memorial commemorates John T Julian, Warren H. Muck, Alex M. Penkala, Carl C.Sawosko, John E. Shindell, Harold D. Webb, Kenneth J. Webb, Harold G. Hayes, Donald B. Hoobler, Francis J. Mellett, A.P. Herron, Patrick H. Neill, Richard J. Huges and Eugene E. Jackson.

The memorial was put up following the release of Band of Brothers, and financed by a number of corporations including Home Box Office, and “Mr & Mrs Tom Hanks”.

  1. I find all of this very interesting. Alex Penkala was my great uncle. Thanks for sharing.
