Dokumentation Obersalzberg/Gästehaus Hoher Göll

The former Gästehaus Hoher Göll was unfortunately allowed to fall into a state of repair, and its interior were plundered. The building was nearly entirely torn down, apart from the front arched facade. It is now the museum Dokumentation Obersalzberg. The museum is a rather general museum about the Third Reich and the holocaust, although it does contain a reasonable amount of information about the Nazi party’s use of the Obersalzberg and Berchtesgaden area.

The museum’s exhibits are nearly entirely in German, although an English audio guide is available.

Entry to the museum allows you to enter the bunker system through a former emergency exit of the bunker system.

View of the mountains, the town of Berchtesgaden can be seen at the bottom of the valley.

  1. In 1999 my wife and I went around to the right of the berghof up the mountain a bit and we came upon a bunker complex where about 5or 6 workers were coming out of a large tunnel going to lunch I think, I talked my wife into going in with me, it was lighted with small lights along the floor, we went in several hundred meters went over a huge whole maybe 40 or 50 feet across, when looking down you could see other huge tunnels going out in different directions, we crossed over a small metal bridge and proceeded in, there were several large rooms along the way with lots of rusting pipes, some furniture after about 20 or 30 minutes all the lights went out,it was as dark as coal, pitch black and my wife was scared as hell and I wasn’t feeling to good either, I started to reach out with my foot to feel the way back tapping every several inches and leaning on the sloped wall, I thought to myself this could be bad as it was Friday and the workers could be heading home from work early and we could be stuck there for the weekend, and there was that metal bridge to find with my foot to go over that huge whole in the ground wasn’t going to be easy, but it did have railings on each side so if I could find it without going down the whole we would be on our way out ——-about 30 minutes later and about 15 feet toward the bridge the lights suddenly came on and we could see pretty good again, we hugged and jumped up and down and started to head out of the tunnel, we crossed over the bridge which was a lot farther along than I thought and then about 5 or 6 German workers heard us and we shouted out to them and we meet and they all started laughing and pointing at us, one guy spoke pretty good English and was very nice considering, after a few questions he walked us out to what I think is this picture is of the bunker entrance, could this be right ?
