Celles

At the cross roads in Celles is a German tank.

The Kampfgruppe von Cochenhausen of the 2nd Panzer Division was situated at the Celles crossroads around the 23rd and 24th December 1944. It was aiming to reach the town of Dinant.  At the crossroads, a German tank went over a mine. A local, Marthe Monrique (owner of the “Pavillion des Ardennes”), was questioned by the Germans. She told them that the road to Dinant had been mined by the Americans. This was a lie, but it was enough to stop the Germans from trying to make it to Dinant and the river Meuse.

She became famous after the war for stopping the Germans.

A plaque on a nearby stone commemorates the Battle of the Bulge in Decembe 1944, the 2nd Armored Division US and the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment UK.
