Le Grand Bunker, Musée du mur de l’Atlantique, Ouistream

Le Grand Bunker hosts the Musée du mur de l’Atlantique. It is situated in a former bunker in Ouistream. The street name is “Avenue du 6 juin”, a reference to 6th June 1944, the day that the D-Day landings ocurred on.

The blockhouse was large and commanded good views of the English channel from the roof. As well as there are various binoculars that could be used to warn of an invasion.

Trink wasser Inhalt 8000 ltr

or

Drinking water content 8000 litres

Part of the breathing apparatus, should the bunker come under gas attack.

The fuse box.

You can still go up a ladder, with steel poles embedded into the concrete. This provides a good view of the sea, as well as the surrounding land.

This is not an easy climb, or suitable for those that do not like heights. I was surprise that this was still open – invariably this kind of thing would be close in the UK, due to health and safety concerns!

View from the top of the ladder.

View of the ladder.

View of the modern nearby ferry terminal in Ouistream with a Brittany Ferries ferry. 60 years ago, this might have been a view of the Allied forces invading France on D-Day!

More from the top of the bunker.

The binoculars.

View onto the sea, just to the left of the modern ferry terminal.

A LCT (Landing Craft Tank), PA30-31, outside the museum.

  3. Nice pictures – especially the landing craft. By thw way the caption says it was a landing craft tank or LCT – in actual fact it is a Landing Craft Mechanised – or LCM and from the picture looks like it was an LCM III, rather than the longer LCM VI.
