American cemetry, St Laurent-sur-Mer

The American cemetery is the resting place of 9000 people. It is quite beautiful, and quite moving to walk amonst hundreds of stone memorials.

One thing that is less plesant is the level of security: in order to get into the cemetery, you have to walk through a metal detector and have your bag thoroughly examined by a security guard. To go up the Eiffel tower, I opened my bag, and offered it to the security guard, to be waved through. This seems a little stupid.

There is an interesting museum inside.

The museum exit.

The memorial stones.

Note the Star of David Jewish graves.

Various Jewish graves have stones on them, a Jewish tradition (note at the end of Schindler’s List how stones are placed on the grave of Oskar Scindler).
